Why are cakes expensive?

Why I Don’t Compete on Price – And Why That’s a Good Thing

As a bespoke cake artist based here in beautiful Perthshire, Scotland, I often see familiar names pop up on local enquiry pages. Couples or party hosts searching for a cake – and understandably, asking for quotes.
And while I’m always happy to see people exploring their options, I want to share something important about my work, my pricing, and why I don’t compete on price.
I Don’t Sell Cakes. I Create Edible Art.
The cakes I make aren’t just desserts. They’re handcrafted centrepieces, tailored to your story, your style, and your celebration. Whether it’s a wedding in the Highlands or a milestone birthday in Perth, each cake is a one-of-a-kind creation made with hours of care, precision, and design skill.
You’re investing in a bespoke experience, not a generic sponge in a box.
You’re Not Just Paying for Ingredients — You’re Paying for Expertise
Yes, my prices include premium ingredients — Belgian chocolate, Scottish butter, local cream, real vanilla — but they also reflect years of learning, testing, designing, and honing my craft.
Behind every cake is:
A consultation and design process
Sketches and concept work
Custom flavours developed to suit your taste
Careful baking and layering for both flavour and structure
Detailed decoration — often taking days to complete
That level of work can’t (and shouldn’t) be compared to supermarket pricing — or even to home bakers working with different methods and goals.
I Believe in Quality Over Discounts
I’ve learned something important as a creative business owner: the right clients aren’t just looking for “cheap” — they’re looking for something special.
And those are the people I love working with. People who understand the value of something made just for them, something memorable and meaningful.
So if someone chooses another baker based on price — truly, that’s okay. There’s space for everyone. But if you’re looking for quality, elegance, and artistry in cake form — I’d love to design something just for you.
When you work with me, you’re not just getting cake — you’re getting a showstopper. A story. A moment in your life, captured in sugar.
And that’s worth every penny.
